Skills You Develop in the Lead Climbing Course

The learning steps build systematically on one another: from tying in directly and clipping to lead belaying, controlled falls and responsible decisions on the wall.

Tying In and Partner Check

You tie the rope directly into your climbing harness with a figure-eight knot and practise the complete partner check before every climb.

Clipping and Rope Management

You learn how to clip quickdraws correctly from stable positions and recognise mistakes such as back-clipping and Z-clipping.

Lead Belaying

You practise paying out and taking in the rope as required, choosing the correct belaying position and maintaining the attention needed to respond appropriately.

Controlled Fall Practice

Through progressively structured exercises, you practise falling and dynamic belaying. The first fall practice deliberately takes place on an overhanging wall.

Appropriate Belaying

You assess the fall zone, ground-fall risk, rope slack, wall features and belayer position together. Close to the ground, you use little slack; higher up, you adapt your belaying to the situation.

Combining the Procedures and Feedback

At the end, you combine everything you have learned into a complete sequence. You receive specific feedback and clear recommendations for your next practice steps.

Reliable Top-Rope Belaying

You can operate your belay device reliably and belay a climber independently on top rope.

What You Should Already Be Able to Do

The lead climbing course builds on existing top-rope experience and is not intended as a complete introduction to rope climbing.

Climbing Level Around UIAA 5+

You climb confidently at approximately UIAA grade 5+ and generally feel comfortable at this level.

Familiar with Climbing Equipment

You are already familiar with the climbing harness, belay device, rope and partner check from top-rope climbing.

How Your Lead Climbing Course Is Structured

New procedures are first practised in a controlled setting and only then transferred step by step to complete lead climbing situations.

1. Brief Top-Rope Check

At the beginning, Christoph checks how reliably you already belay on top rope.

2. Figure-Eight Knot and Clipping

You practise tying directly into the rope with a figure-eight knot and clipping the rope correctly into the quickdraws.

3. Belaying Drills on the Ground

Without a climber on the wall, you first practise taking in and, in particular, paying out the rope in a controlled manner.

4. Lead Climbing with Additional Protection

During the first exercises, Christoph additionally protects the climber with a top rope. This allows mistakes to be identified and corrected in a controlled setting.

5. Controlled Fall Practice

Once the fundamental procedures are established, progressively structured fall exercises follow on a suitable overhanging wall.

6. Independent Lead Climbing

Finally, climbing and belaying are performed without additional top-rope protection. Christoph corrects the remaining details and provides specific next practice steps.

What Is the Difference Between Top-Rope and Lead Climbing?

In top-rope climbing, the rope already runs through an anchor at the top and is taken in as the climber moves upwards. In lead climbing, the climber brings the rope up from the ground and clips it independently into the intermediate protection.

Can I Book the Lead Climbing Course on My Own?

Yes. Christoph can climb using an automatic belay system while you belay him with the lead rope. For the later fall-practice session, it is ideal if someone with existing lead climbing experience can join you.

Can I Use My Own Belay Device?

Yes, provided the manufacturer has approved it for sport climbing. The instruction is adapted to your specific belay device. Climbing Academy Vienna recommends assisted-braking devices such as autotubes or semi-automatic devices for sport climbing.

Can I Lead Climb and Belay Independently After the Course?

That depends on your personal progress. At the end of the course, you receive an honest professional assessment and a clear recommendation about which procedures you can continue practising independently and which ones you should consolidate further.
