Become Independent on Real Rock

For climbers with indoor top-rope or lead-climbing experience who want to understand and learn essential outdoor procedures. Depending on your goal, you practise route selection, climbing calls, fixed protection and anchors, threading, changing systems, independent abseiling, cleaning a route and risk management.

Targeted Outdoor Climbing Coaching

For advanced climbers with specific goals. Together, you work on climbing technique, tactics, lead climbing, route planning, risk management or suitable solutions for retreating from a route, adapted to your ability, the route and the conditions on real rock.

All outdoor climbing courses are personally led by Christoph Steiner, a state-certified instructor for sport climbing. The suitable climbing area near Vienna or in Lower Austria is selected according to your experience, course goal and the current conditions. Outdoor climbing courses are planned personally and cannot be booked through the direct indoor appointments. Briefly tell me about your climbing and belaying experience, your learning goal, the number of participants and possible dates. I will then suggest a suitable course format and climbing area.

Is the Outdoor Climbing Course Suitable Without Previous Experience?

Yes. Outdoor climbing courses with Climbing Academy Vienna are also possible without previous experience. We work individually and adapt the course content and climbing area directly to your ability, experience and goal. We select from several suitable crags so that the location fits the participants as well as possible. Existing top-rope or lead-climbing skills are helpful because they allow us to focus more closely on the particular demands of outdoor climbing.

What Exactly Do You Learn in the Outdoor Climbing Course?

During an introductory outdoor session, the focus is on climbing on a top rope set up by Christoph. A regular outdoor climbing course covers the essential skills for climbing on real rock. These include climbing technique and tactics, top-rope and lead climbing, belaying, climbing calls, route selection, equipment, risk assessment and appropriate behaviour at the crag. Other typical topics include threading the rope at the anchor, cleaning the route while being lowered, independent abseiling and choosing an appropriate procedure when retreating from a route. The exact focus is adapted to your previous experience, goals and the situation on the rock.

How Long Does an Outdoor Climbing Course Take?

At least four hours are generally recommended for a regular outdoor climbing course. We also recommend approximately four hours for an introductory outdoor session, allowing enough time to arrive, prepare and climb. A clearly defined abseiling session may exceptionally be completed in three hours. Anyone who wants to acquire comprehensive skills for independent outdoor climbing will require a longer or multi-stage course, depending on previous experience and the learning goal. The appropriate duration is agreed personally in advance.

How Does the Outdoor Climbing Course Work?

Once the suitable climbing area has been confirmed, you receive the exact meeting point. From there, we walk to the crag together, discuss appropriate behaviour and safety, and begin with a general and climbing-specific warm-up. The agreed course content then follows. Participants can always raise spontaneous questions or topics during the course. At the end, we pack the equipment together and return to the starting point.

Where Do the Outdoor Climbing Courses Take Place?

Our typical outdoor course areas are in Kaltenleutgeben and Mödling. These crags are particularly suitable for a first experience on real rock. For advanced courses, we also select more demanding areas according to the goal, including Peilstein, Thalhofergrat, Piestingtal, Hohe Wand, the Wachau, Höllental and other climbing areas in the mountains around Vienna.

What Equipment Should I Bring to the Outdoor Climbing Course?

Please bring your own climbing shoes. You are welcome to use your own climbing equipment. By prior arrangement, Climbing Academy Vienna can currently fully equip up to two people with the required climbing equipment, except for climbing shoes. For larger groups, we clarify which equipment is available, needs to be brought or must be organised separately. You receive a detailed equipment list in good time before the course.

How Is Risk Managed During the Outdoor Climbing Course?

As with many outdoor sports, climbing on real rock involves certain risks. To keep them as low as reasonably possible, we select the course area according to the conditions, your experience and your learning goal. Before the season and on the day of the course, we carry out visual checks for changes such as loose rock and irregularities on bolts and anchors. We choose suitable crags with convenient access and bases and the lowest practical risk of rockfall. Every course is led by a state-certified instructor for sport climbing. We also recommend suitable insurance, for example through an alpine association such as Naturfreunde.

What Happens in Bad Weather?

The weather is always considered when planning an outdoor climbing course. Depending on temperature, sun, wind and moisture, we choose a suitable climbing area, using shaded walls in hot weather and sunnier rock in cooler conditions. Where possible, a protected crag may also be used in uncertain weather. If climbing is not sensible because of the conditions, the course is postponed. If no alternative date can be found, the course fee is refunded.

Can I Book the Outdoor Climbing Course on My Own?

Yes. Outdoor climbing courses can also be booked by one person. As every course is individually planned, one-to-one coaching is straightforward and often particularly efficient. Booking as a pair or your own small group is also ideal. Depending on the content and experience, up to six people can participate. There are currently no fixed open group dates; outdoor climbing courses take place by personal enquiry.
